(93cm. x 118cm) Bearing label on reverse; Ferdinand Burgdorff Gallery, Pebble Beach, Calif.1954Ferdinand Burgdorff is known for his romantic landscape paintings of the Monterey Peninsula and the desert Southwest.Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Burgdorff studied at the Cleveland School of Art before heading to Paris to work with Rene Menard and Florence Este. In 1907 he settled in Carmel, California and became an active member of the art colony. In 1919 he lived in Mill Valley, California but moved back to the Monterey Peninsula the next year and built a house in Pebble Beach designed by the legendary architect, Bernard Maybeck. He lived there for the rest of his life.During the years 1907 to 1924 Burgdorff made numerous trips to the southwestern deserts, including the Hopi and Navajo reservations and the Grand Canyon, which provided him with subject matter for the rest of his life. He accompanied railroad crews and surveyors into uninhabited desert areas to find and record unspoiled landscapes. He stayed, for a time, in Santa Fe where he preferred to paint desolate stretches of desert rather than the more popular aspen and adobe themes.

( 84 x 74cm)Paul Lauritz developed a fascination for desert landscapes, and he and his wife did much exploring and extended camping in the deserts of the Mohave, Colorado, and Arizona. At first, Paul Lauritz did Plein air painting but discovered that he got a stronger light on the canvas by completing the work in his studio. He used gigantic brushes, pre-war French bristles and even used them to achieve minute strokes. He also used palette knives and his hand to achieve a textural effect and generally simple, primary colors. Lauritz was active in the California art scene as a member of the Los Angeles Municipal Art Commission and President of the California Art Club.

She was the director the Carmel Summer School of Art sponsored by the Carmel Arts and Crafts Club and a founding member of the Carmel Art Association (CAA) in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California.[1]

Keith's early training as a wood engraver encouraged him to reproduce the exact topography and details of a landscape early in his career. Keith had also already expressed a preference by 1870 to "study altogether from Nature," reflecting in part the admonishments of the influential writer John Ruskin.

Nels Hagerup (1864-1922) was born in Christiania, Norway in 1864 into a family that included the composer Edward Hagerup Grieg. Nels Hagerup studied at the Christiania Art School, Royal Academy in Berlin, and in Copenhagen with Carl Locher. After sailing to the West Coast as a merchant seaman in 1882, he settled in Portland, Oregon. There he was an instructor of drawing at the Bishop Scott Academy (now called Hill Academy) and was a founder of the Portland Art Association. About 1892 he moved to San Francisco where he remained. He worked there as a stevedore on the waterfront and later established a home and studio in the Sunset District at 1224 46th Avenue

(40cm. x 30cm)Pam Glover is a plein-air landscape painter in California. She is also a founding member of The Outsiders, a group of plein-air painters. All of her paintings are done on location so that she can capture the sun and shadows falling across the brilliant California landscapes. Pam Glover was born in Shanghai, China and was exposed early to the Far Eastern influences in the arts. Her education is of a varied and extensive nature, as it includes China -where she studied for three years with Olge Popoff - the Poly Technic of Art in Sydney, Australia, the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, CA and four years with Lundy Siegrist, member of the Society of Six. (51cm. x 41cm)Gertrude Snow was known for a variety of artistic endeavors, painting landscapes and wood working.. In her workshop she made several pieces of furniture from redwood, ranging from a piano bench (now in the Alameda Museum) to picture frames and gardens posts fashioned after lions and griffins. There is a possibility she carved the frame for this landscape, carved with a band of corn enclosing floral designs.
