Tillman House History
In about 1875 Frank Tillman, a prominent San Francisco business man, who made his fortune selling safes and scales, built a house at Larkin and Broadway for his family.
After Frank Tillman’s death, his widow determined it was in her families best interest to move the family home from Broadway and Larkin.
And move it she did in 1904 to a lot she had purchased on Van Ness Ave. near Chestnut…moving this house must have been quite a site.
On Van Ness, the house rose with a lower floor added, and became somewhat grander in scale through the addition of various architectural flourishes.
The Earthquake
In 1906 as San Francisco was aflame, most of the homes and structures along Van Ness were slated for demolition, in our fair cities attempt to create a firebreak, as indeed this house was. Dynamite was placed all around the home and for this house all was lost, but for the fact that the fire sputtered out and stopped somewhere near Vallejo, so in the end, this house was spared.
A True Time Capsule
This is very likely the last house in San Francisco that survives the Gold Rush, and Earthquake eras intact, and owned these last 135 years by the same family. Many of the homes original furnishings are still here!
